Makgadikgadi Pans
Star gazing in the clearest of skies
Perfect place for star gazing – Makgadikgadi pans. Botswana is a premier Southern African safari destination offering some of the best wildlife viewing on the planet, especially in and around the Chobe and Okavango Delta region. The Kalahari Desert with its San Bushman culture is another Botswana highlight that deserves a place on your itinerary.
Makgadikgadi Pans (national park) are the most visible remnants of a super-lake (an area of 80 000 square km) that started drying up almost 10,000 years ago. As the water evaporated, huge glistening salt-encrusted pans were left. These pans are spectacular and stretch as far as the eye can see. This amazing landscape is dotted with rocky outcrops and large stranded sand dunes. The pan offers stunning star gazing at night.
Journeying into this magical land offers an ancient mystique and true isolation found nowhere else in the world. The great grass plains of Makgadikgadi and the neighboring pan complexes are visually incredible. Visitors are amazed by the contrasting sky and horizon of this remote landscape. Herds of wildebeest, springbok, and zebra move north into the Nxai Pan when the rains start, accompanied by the predators.
